JEFFERSON AIRPLANE!!
Live At Golden Gate Park
May 9, 1969
Charly
"The culture of drugs and
freedom had taken its toll and
the once beautiful flower
children were shrivelling and
becoming bums."
Jon "Mojo" Mills, from the CD
booklet
Well, old "Mojo's" above
analysis may be a bit harsh, but
there is certainly no question
that the scene in the Bay area
had changed in quantifiable
terms since the JA first took off
in 1967.
The "Summer of Love" was
long gone, and the Haight
Ashbury district in San
Fransisco became known more
for hard drug use, crime and
rip-offs, rather than for coming
to with flowers in your hair.
Nonetheless, the Airplane still
did the Utopian thing on May 9.
1969 at the famous Polo Field, in
Golden Gate Park.
And this 70 minute set filled with
hits but also tunes from their
then upcoming Volunteers
album is perhaps as tight as the
band would ever be.
The JA's Bethel, New York
performance 3 months later
would become much more
famous because of the movie
soundtrack but this gig has a
freshness to it untainted by the
Woodstock Nation myth, and
the following death of the
hippies at Altamont in
December, 1969.
Yes, Grace Slick is in full voice
at Golden Gate, if a little wasted
as the CD's liner notes point out.
Probably too were Marty Balin,
Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen
and Jack Casady, but who
cares? When in Rome, etc.
The JA sure could play,
regardless and this nearly 40
year old live stereo recording
makes that a non-negotiable
point.
Feed your heads, indeed.
