THE INTERNATIONAL
SUBMARINE BAND
Safe At Home
Sundazed
Released 40 years ago in
March, the country/rock/folk,
ISB debut was the first
serious music vehicle for the
now mythic Gram Parsons.
Long out of print, Sundazed
has this newly found 4 track
stereo remastered version
with one bonus track that any
fan of the genre should check
out.
Back in the day,Parsons had
come from good country
country, in Georgia-his natural
father was the quite
interestingly named
Coon Dog Connor-and had an
advantage that many of the
music era never had.
Old Coon Dog had married
into a wealthy family and
while most of the emerging
60s musicians were lucky to
have Kraft dinner before
possibly hitting the big-time,
Gram collected a $100,000 a
year stipend from his family,
after his father committed
suicide.
This fiscal leg-up gave
Parsons the ability to
basically pick and choose
where and with what and with
whom he would work with.
So Parsons, who had drifted
back to some of his country
roots by '68, formed the
improbably named Int. Sub
Band, and produced some
nice covers of standards like I
Still Miss Someone, as well as
4 self-penned tunes, including
Blue Eyes, for Safe At Home.
Many rock historians judge
this album to be the
"cornerstone" of
country-rock, as Parsons
would go on to hone his
music with the Byrds, and
then as a solo performer.
At the end of the decade,
Parsons would also go on to
connect with the Rolling
Stones and influence some of
their most respected early 70s
recordings.
And this CD basically
showcases where it all began.
