THE DOORS
Live in Pittsburgh
May 2, 1970
Rhino

"This album is a chronicle of a
live performance that, coupled
with all the rest of the
concerts from the 1970 tour
are a magnificent document of
the Doors as they were meant
to be heard-live, in concert."

Bruce Botnick, audio engineer

The Doors played hundreds
of live gigs between 1967
and 1970, and apparently, a
whole bunch of 'em ended
up on 8 track tape.

So, for the past 5 years or
so, we have been treated to
some of the band's best-and
 sloppy-concerts from the
day when a  Doors concert
was one of the hottest items
in the pop/rock scene.

Accordingly, this latest
mining from the vaults, a
lively May 1970 show in
Pittsburgh is one of the best,
unlike last year's In Boston
multi disc set which found
Jim Morrison drunk as a
skunk and the band working
overtime to try to make up.

Recorded, mixed and
produced by the Doors'
original engineer, Bruce
Botnick, this new one is a
full value  near 80 minute
concert with Morrison
apparently sober, and
delivering one of the best
live vocal performances so
far released.

Highlights include a 22
minute version of When The
Music's Over, a go at Robert
Johnson's Crossroads
Blues, Willie Dixon's Close
To You,and a rollicking
Roadhouse Blues.

The single CD arrives via
digi-pack with a LP-like
vintage inner sleeve, an
excellent 12 page illustrated
booklet, and a groovy
psychedelic front cover that
may have you saying "wow,
man."

For those of you who only
know the Doors music in
concert from the seminal
Absolutely Live, Live in
Pittsburgh would be a great
place to start to check out
what their late period shows
were more accurately like.

Morrison, under pressure
due to an upcoming
obscenity trial seemed to be
capable of just about
anything,save for dropping
his trousers again, if in fact
he actually did it as alleged.

But the tension that was
created by that legal ruckus
seemed to give a weird
scene inside the goldmine
vibe to these 1970s shows,
and the Pittsburgh gig
played in front of  a huge
audience at a domed hockey
rink is authentic aural
evidence of that legend.
