BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS
Original Master Recording
MFSL
SACD Hybrid
We here at Boomer Media Review
have always thought very highly
of the audio expertise of Mobile
Fidelity Sound Lab.
Over the past 20 odd years, the
company based in Chicago has
put out consistently high quality
audio, starting with their famous
Original Master Recording half
speed masters vinyl, and now the
high end Gain 2 mastered CDs
continue the tradition of audio
excellence.
Case in point is MFSL's great job
with the iconic second Blood
Sweat &Tears album from 1969.
Quite simply, this is the very best I
have ever heard this record sound.
The bass is bottomless, and tight.
Overall clarity and warmth
reminds one of the original LP,
although we know it never
sounded as good, at least to our
ears.
And the above is just what you get
on a half decent CD player.
If you have an SACD capable
player, then you get even more,
including a noticeable opening up
of the stereo sound stage.
Although BS&T was sort of
lumped in with other "jazz/rock"
bands of the ear, this second
effort from the band was in fact
more blues/jazz/rock than other
pop groups employing a horn
section.
Some snotty purists claim that
after founder Al Kooper split and
was replaced by David Clayton-
Thomas for this recording, it was
all downhill for the band.
Perhaps it was so later on, but the
fact is this first Clayton-Thomas
BS&T gathering was a world-wide
smash and in some corners is
considered the zenith of BS&T's
long career.
Well worth another listen,
especially in this MFSL offering,
with over 20 minutes of extra
audio, spread over two live bonus
tracks from 1969.
