YUSUF'S CAFE Sessions
Yusuf Islam
Universal DTS DVD
"And some times, you know, there's a
song that needs to be sung, and maybe
you gotta sing it."
Yusuf Islam
The artist formerly known as Cat
Stevens swears he never even
picked up a guitar for 25 years, after
his total conversion to Islam in 1979.
Yet he says on this new DVD that the
guitar that his son brought into the
house in 2003, was not so foreign to
him that he could not remember all
his old chords, and to figure out
some new ones, as well.
And so for fans of Cat/Yusuf, this
career spanning 5.1 surround sound
disc- his first full public performance
in 28 years recorded in
London-should not be a
disappointment.
The aged gems like Father and Son,
Where Do The Children Play, and
Peace Train are here, but so are some
new ones from his come-back, An
Other Cup, released earlier this year.
One of those new songs is actually
pretty old.
Although it does not appear in full on
this DVD-you can find it on the An
Other Cup CD-Islam explains on this
DVD's 52 minute BBC produced film
that Greenfields, Golden Sands was
actually written in 1968, but not
recorded.
The song, an ode to the environment,
features the lyric, "I know I'm not the
only one," which much to Islam's
later amazement, was contained in
John Lennon's seminal Imagine, in
1971.
Islam, explains the coincidence as
"incredible, but also adds that there
was then "a resonance in the
universe, (and) somehow we joined
together in this thought"
Also included with this DVD are two
music videos, the One More Cup
short film, and a "settee version" of
Islam performing an acoustic Peace
Train.
Islam says that he had to leave the
music business to "get a life," and
"get off his high horse."
I'd bet than many are glad that he has
changed his mind and saddled up,
again.
