THE WHO
At Killburn 1977
Image Entertainment

"Hope I die before I get old."

Pete Townshend

The first time I ever laid blue eyes
on the Who in concert it was the
summer of 1970, and film of the
previous year Woodstock festival
was doing boffo box office and
blowing my young man's mind.

Of course by 15 years of age, I
had heard the Who on the radio
and at parties, but to see the boys
in the breaking dawn, thrashing
about in front of 300,000 stoned
hippies, was, well, life altering.

The Beatles and the Stones were
still cool, but this,
this, was way
out there.

Now, in 2008, the vaults are
mined for an impressive two DVD
set of the bands gig at Kilburn in
1977, and of note to purists, a live
performance of Tommy, recorded
and filmed at the London
Coliseum in December 1969.

First, the Kilburn concert looks,
and sounds, fantastic.

The multi-camera images, and 5.1
audio make this a keeper for all
Who fans, and other, for that
matter.

Shot in front of an invited crowd,
to be used in The Kids Are Alright
doc, this concert has long been
awaited by Who purists, and
tragically, ended up being one of
the last live performances by
Keith Moon.

The 1969 Tommy performance is
admiditlly a mixed bag.

Although professionally filmed
and recorded, the lighting was
insufficient for the 16mm
cameras, and the 5.1 mix of the
original 8 track tapes do not
match that of the Kilburn show,
for obvious reasons.

Nevertheless, the '69 gig is still
vintage Who right near the height
of their powers, and is certainly
well worth the time and money.
