BLAST FROM THE
PAST:WEST, BRUCE &
LAING
Why Dontcha
Repertoire, UK Import
When then the hard-rocking,
Leslie West led Mountain power
quartette broke up in early 1972,
West decided to try the popular
supergroup route.
Enlisting former Cream bassist
Jack Bruce, and poaching
drummer Corky Laing from
Mountain, resulted in a power
trio that appeared to on the
surface be the next big thing.
Er, not exactly.
The first single, Why
Dontcha/The Doctor got pretty
decent AOR FM airplay.
Unfortunately, the rest of the 8
tracks on the LP were,
depending on your point of
view, perhaps not even up to
Mountain standards, and the
album shortly became one of
those "coulda-been"
propositions.
However, this latest reissue is a
big improvement sonic wise to
previous editions, and comes in
a groovy gatefold digital
package, with an essay on the
band by Chris Welch.
The first West, Bruce & Laing
studio effort became their last
one, and only a live LP was
released after that.
Still, worth a listen.
