THE UNRELEASED BEATLES
Music & Film

By Richie Unterberger
Backbeat Books
$35

I'd love to turn you on, to this book.

John Lennon also sang about
everybody having a wet dream, and
I'd venture to say that this volume on
the Fabs does the trick for the
hard-core fan, as well as the merely
curious.

I mean, what isn't here? Not much.

Unterberger writes that the first
record he ever bought was Meet The
Beatles, and the second, a bootleg of
the group.

And that is sort of the way this book
unfolds.

We get detailed accounts of different
versions of well-known material from
the legit releases that did not actually
get released, and then breakdowns
of various versions of the same
material-in a different form-that has
appeared for over 35 years in booted
vinyl and CD, and now, DVD.

So, it's all here: the early era from
1957-1961, then a year by year recap
of just about everything the Fabs
were doing in the studio, film, TV,
radio, and tour, right to the end of the
long and winding road in'70.

There is also a complete list of every
song-and even fragment there
of-performed by the Beatles during
the ill fated Get Back sessions, and
I'm sure that those that study the
sessions will also be studying this
book for more information.

And, of great interest to many
collectors, is a list and critique of all
of the known, recorded, live
performances of the Beatles,
especially from the period between
1964-66.

There are also 100 excellent
photographs of the group and
attendant memorabilia, with many of
the pix heretofore unseen by this
reviewer.

If there could be any nay saying, it is
that all illustrations and pix are black
and white, and the lay-out is  a little
jammed.

But other than that, the Unreleased
Beatles deserves to be regarded well
into the top 10 of all books written on
the group.
