TRAVELING WILBURYS
COLLECTION
Deluxe Edition

Rhino

"
The birth of the Traveling Wilburys was
a happy accident."

Mo Austin, Chairman Emeritus, Warner
Bros. Records, 2007

So, accidents will happen, and the
post modern super group of George
Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison,
Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, was not
only a happy, but good one as well.

And now, just a year shy of about 20
years ago today, comes an excellent
reissue of the original TW Vol.1&3

The packaging is first-class, with a
classy looking digi-pak box with
which to house 2CDs and a DVD,
glossy 40 page mini book, and a
packet of photos, postcards, TW
sticker, and a genuine certificate of
authenticity (see bottom of page).

The remaster by Lynne is a good
one, although perhaps not the
tremendous improvement from
original late 80s digital drek that most
had been hoping for.

Two unissued tracks from the Vol. 1
sessions-Maxine, and Like A Ship,
are welcome, but Vol. 3 is padded
only with a previously released
cut-Nobody's Child, and a B-side,
Runaway.

Despite what Lynne has said
recently in interviews, surely more
unreleased material exists-be it
alternates or outtakes-and this
package  could have used more of
whatever there is.

And while the inclusion of a "bonus"
DVD with a pretty cool 25 minute
mini-doc on the Wilburys is good, it,
and the accompanying 5 music
videos are not in 5.1 surround sound.

In fact, they are not even in stereo,
but rather PCM mono, for some
reason.

Yet overall, a fine edition to all fans of
Lucky, Otis, Charlie T Jr, Lefty, and
Nelson Wilbury.

Handle, with care.
