Sly &Family Stone
There's A Riot Goin' On
Limited Deluxe Edition
Epic/Legacy
"There's A Riot Goin' On was a
masterpiece of dark, simmering
grooves and visions from the
other side."
Joel Selvin's liner notes, from his
book, For The Record:Sly&Family
Stone
This, this, was the album that
Sly spent nearly 2 years on,
before it's release in the fall of
1971, and the one that began his
flame-out from post Woodstock
superstardom.
A laconic yet angry lo-fi
recording-the master tapes were
repeatedly re-recorded on-the
album was Sly's dirty-funk
manifesto on the state of the
Union.
Yet despite being perhaps Sly's
first solo album-many of the
original band members had
fled-the LP still managed two
Top 40 hits in Family Affair-his
last #1- and Runnin' Away.
(Bobby Womack, Miles Davis
and Billy Preston were
(uncredited) contributors)
Drug abuse and changing
musical tastes would see Sly
never equal this effort.
This special edition digipack
reissue with 12 page booklet
contains 4 bonus tracks of
varying degrees of interest, and
all in mono.
For those who only know Sly
from the radio hits, this is the
one to check out to see what he
was really capable of.
