RARE EARTH
In Concert

Russian GEMA "Import"

"Focus your eye, on the filthy sky."

Hey Big Brother

Question: who was the first white
act to sign with Motown Records?

Answer: Rare Earth, and they did
have soul, paving the way for other
"blue-eyed" soul-mates, like the
Average White Band.

And if you were a Rare Earth liker
in the early 70s, then perhaps the
elaborately packaged In Concert
LP was a fave for you.

The 1972 double album came in a
"backpack" cover, with a back
cover "flap," and was probably one
of the highlights of the golden age
of long playing cover art.

Unfortunately, save for a short time
when Motown was one of the first
big record companies to jump on
the new CD format in the mid 80s,
this superb live album has been
unavailable for nearly 20 years.

Used copies sometimes fetched 3
figures on e-Bay, and old vinyl
collectors kept an eye out at
garage sales.

Then, the wild west of record
licensing-Russia-took notice, and
produced a copy which to my ears
sounds exactly like the Motown
version, circa 20 years ago.

So if you hit the right retailer-or mail
order service-you can grab In
Concert for around $20.

And yes, this is the live set that
featured a 23:30 take of Get Ready
and sizzling  performances of Hey
Big Brother, and Born to Wander.

There is also that great little
interlude after the band finishes up
the show opener, I Just Want To
Celebrate, when in a Woodstock
flashback, an official takes to stage
and warns the crowd to "stay outta
the water."

(No, not a form of the brown acid,
but rather the gig was held
outdoors with h2o in the mix.)

But why this CD is not available via
North American or even UK record
distributor is probably only known
to the lawyers.

Hopefully, it will get sorted in our
lifetime, and a new, expanded,
remastered edition will be made
available, along with another 1974
show that was reportedly recorded,
and never released.

Because In Concert has to rate as
one of the top, rock, live albums of
all time, and it should be readily
available to prove it.
