PINK FLOYD
Piper At The Gates of Dawn
Limited Edition Box
EMI
If you thought that the Beatles were the
psychedelic masters in 1967, and you
are also not familiar with the original
Pink Floyd's contribution to musical
mind expansion, then this 40th
anniversary set is the place to become
so experienced.
This is founding group member Syd
Barrett's pinnacle of creativeness, and
the quality and innovation of his songs
on Piper led many to believe he was
the next genius of rock.
Sadly, Barrett was to quickly flame out,
a victim of drugs and group politics.
Yet for this brief moment, Barrett
achieved amazing sound collages, and
even top 40 fare with See Emily Play, a
single included as a bonus in this 3 CD
commemorative.
The remastering of this set is excellent,
with EMI's Abbey Road studios
figuring out the right way to transfer
original mono masters to the CD
format, without them sounding flat.
As well as an expansive stereo mix of
the album, the 3rd CD in the box
contains 9 tracks of which 3 are
previously unreleased, including a
stereo mix of Barrett's quirky Apples
and Oranges.
And of major note to Barrett fans, is the
inclusion of a full color 16 page
booklet, reproducing some original
artwork that is perhaps a window into
the tormented soul of the artist.
Also included are the lyrics to all
original album tracks.
If this is the type of treatment that EMI
plans to give future Pink Floyd "limited
edition" releases, then it is pretty likely
that fans of the group will be ecstatic.
A worthy addition to the Floyd legacy.
