EAGLES
Long Road Out Of Eden
Erc
What other group could survive
27 years between new studio
releases besides the Eagles?
I really can't think of one off hand,
but based on this 2 CD package
from the band that (re)invented the
"California sound," the Eagles
have done it.
Now, I'm not saying that this 91
minute collection of 20 songs is
1974-1980 glory years are back
again territory.
But I am saying that very few
Eagles fans will be disappointed
with the sound and style they
have come to know from the band
since 1972.
That style, one that has sold over
a 100 million albums could be
described as a quasi-cowboy
American dream/nightmare
country rock/pop melange that
obviously sits well with a lot of
ears.
And this time out, the Eagles get
political as well, with long musical
tomes against the Iraq war-the title
track, and the Glenn Frey
instrumental, I Dreamed There
Was No War-as well as Don
Henley's plaintiff cries for the
environment in No More Walks In
The Woods.
Of course Joe Walsh gets his turn
with a (soft) rocker in Last Good
Time In Town, and Timothy B.
Schmidt is his usual soulful self.
Certainly anyone alive in the past
35 years would know on first
listen that this is an Eagles
album, yet the band has added a
little exotic flavour to the mix, with
a Middle Eastern vibe to the 10
minute Long Road Out Of Eden.
But, after such a long time
between studio efforts, will this
thing be popular, and sell? (There
is a diff.)
Well, with the band's exclusive
with Wal-Mart-and surely big
bucks up front for the group even
though the double CD retails for a
pretty low $11.88-the musicians
and the suits must think so.
Yet with the band being out of the
new music spotlight for so long,
one wonders about anyone
caring save for the Baby Boomers
and hard-core Eagles fans.
For instance, the day before the
album was skedded for release, I
called the Wal-Mart music
department, and a young sales
associate didn't even seem to
know who the Eagles were,
despite the store's big stake in the
exclusive promotion.
(Hotel what?)
Then, on the day of release, I
joined a handful of 40-50
somethings at the Wal-Mart music
section, milling about looking for
the long awaited release.
The eager mini throng were
anxiously scanning the new
release rack for their heroes, but it
was just puzzled faces from all.
Because, the store had placed
about 50 of the title in a modest
cardboard display stand, that was
facing backwards to the flow
coming looking for the CD!
But, the Spiderman DVD was right
out front for all to see, even
though that item was being sold
by everybody across North
America.
John Lennon once (in)famously
mused that the Beatles were
bigger than Jesus.
But, maybe just as relevant in this
day and age, is a Spiderman
bigger than Eagles?
I'm putting my lot in with the
Eagles, until the insect man can
write a peaceful, easy feeling and
worthwhile song.
Long Road Out Of Eden is "produced by the
Eagles."
An ecological theme is present.
