CHROME DREAMS II
Neil Young
Reprise
CD+DVD Digi-pack

My my;hey, hey: so what if this
"new" release from the venerable
Neil Young is actually about 30
years old?

And who cares if there really was
no Chrome Dreams-the original
was shelved by Neil in 1977 for
reasons known to him-so how can
there be a "II"?

For as John Lennon once said,
"genius is pain," and some fans of
the iconic Canadian rocker
sometimes feel that Young is one- a
pain, that is.

But never look a gift (crazy) horse
in the mouth, and this latest gift
from Young's archives is a good
one.

With left over tracks from 1977 to
1988, Neil, along with help from
Crazy Horse and the Blue Notes
have combined to offer a 66 minute
overview of Young's varied career
and styles.

Yet the gem on this release is from
Young's one off album experiment
with the Blue Notes from This
Note's For You, circa 1988.

The 18 minute opus entitled
Ordinary People with multiple
verses, blaring horns and grungy
guitar licks is worth the price of
admit alone.

And, if you spring the couple extra
bucks for the combo CD/DVD
package, you will get the album in
what Young calls "super saturated
stereo," recorded in 24 bit 96kHz
digital glory, and which the DVD
menu set-up page says has "256
times the resolution of a CD and an
improved dynamic range of 48db."

In English?

It sounds damn good!

And, if you run the DVD through
your home theater system on the
DPLII mode (Dolby pro Logic II,
which is a faux 5.1) you will
experience close-I said close-to a
real surround sound experience.

Now Neil, hurry up with the big box
set!
