THE McCARTNEY YEARS
Paul McCartney, Wings, et al
Warner/Rhino
DTS 5.1/ 3 DVDs
The Beatles ruled for 6 way too
short years.
But Paul McCartney's solo career
is now into it's 38th year, if you
can believe that.
I mean, where has the time gone?
Well, this new 3 DVD "best of"
from Macca and Wings and
what-not gives some idea of
where the years have evaporated
to.
With, as the sticker says, "over 40
music videos and 2 hours of live
performances, archive gems &
interviews and never before seen
footage," this is almost 6 hours of
McCartney.
The good: the DTS 5.1 mixes
contained in these 3 DVDs is
mostly very good..
For material that spans from 1970
to 2005 and with some recorded in
much less fidelity-try 8 versus 64
or more digital tracks-the
surround sound treatment is the
real story of this package.
Listen to C Moon-from the early
70s-and then later songs like My
Brave Face and Figure of Eight, to
hear what I mean.
The Glastonbury concert is played
superbly, and sounds same.
The running commentary by
McCartney is interesting/glib.
The not so good: Although the
navigation on these DVDs is
acceptable, the default audio
setting is the remixed stereo PCM
track, rather than the DTS 5.1.
So each time a disc is loaded-and
I did have a few problems with
some of the DVDs loading
slowly-you have to reset the audio
to the DTS button each time,
which is a pain.
The Unplugged segment is lame.
McCartney chose to only include
7 tracks from a real rocking
Wings-in-their-prime Rockshow
gig, instead of the whole concert,
angering many fans who have
been patiently waiting for the long
deleted video.
Still, overall-and as the Macca man
himself might say, say, say; this is
a worthwhile addition to any
McCartney fan collection.
