JOURNEY
Escape
Sony/BMG/Legacy
Is this thing perhaps the ultimate
album orientated rock album?
I mean, even if you were brought
up on polkas and line-dances and
what-not, this has got to grab your
attention, ear and heart.
Released in 1981, Escape was Joe
Perry and the boys absolute finest
effort-and hour in the sun-never to
be even come close to.
It had it all: awesome album
artwork and out of 10 songs,
about 3 all-timers, and 3 damn
good ones. And no clunkers.
After all this record was/is home to
Don't Stop Believin'-which I do
believe just had a bit of a
renaissance courtesy of a certain
TV gangster and politican-Still
They Ride, and Open Arms.
And if guitarist Neal Schon is not
one of the top 20 electric axe
wielders of all time, then I'll be
disappointed-and surprised.
Power chords from big spaces
and stinging, crying leads make
this a showcase for Schon, and
well, what can one say about
Perry's vocals other than that they
are uniquely signature.
As usual, Legacy has done a great
job with this reissue, featuring a
gloss, gatefold, digi-pak with 16
page booklet, listing every date on
Journey's amazing 1981-82 world
tour, and lots of pix.
The 4 bonus tracks-a B-side and 3
live ones from a Houston gig in
1981, have all been available in
one form or another before, but
still close out this special edition
well.
The only down side for me, is that
it's not '81 anymore, and I'm not
26, either.
