JEFFERSON AIRPLANE
Sweeping Up The Spotlight, Live at
the Fillmore East, 1969

Sony/BMG Legacy

Captured via the original
soundboard recording, and
according to Legacy's Randy
Haecker, "mixed and mastered"
utilizing "the best in modern studio
technology to make the CD sound
as much like the original concert
performance as possible," this is
an artifact of the Jefferson Airplane
at their best.

The nearly 80 minute set
does
sound fresh and vital, with a good
stereo sound stage, tight bass, and
clear vocals.

Culled from two Fillmore gigs
performed a scant 3 months after
the Airplane's historic appearance
at Woodstock, this CD brings 12
tracks-10 of them previously
unreleased- featuring some of the
band's signature tunes.

Included are an energetic versions
of Volunteers, Plastic Fantastic
Lover, and White Rabbit, as well as
a 10 minute barrage of The Other
Side of This Life, with Grace Slick
in fine form.

And speaking of Ms. Slick, if there
is one complaint of Sweeping Up
the Spotlight, it is that Grace is
relegated to backing vocals and
tambourine until half way through
this disc, although of course Marty
Balin and Paul Kantner knew how
to sing a bit as well.

The CD booklet contains an
informative essay from guitarist
Jorma Kaukonen.

An essential addition to 60s lore.
