"John would have been proud of
this album."
Yoko Ono
Even though tribute albums are
obviously far from something new,
perhaps this one deserves a
closer look.
31 primo John Lennon songs by
some of the most outstanding pop
perfumers of the current era is in
of itself, worthy.
Throw in the noble act of profits
going to Amnesty's current efforts
to assuage the disaster in Darfur,
and you have good combo of
music, and righteousness.
Here are the highlights, as I hear
them:
Mother, by Christina Aguilera
Gimme Some Truth, by Jakob
Dylan/ Dhani Harrison
Oh My Love, by Jackson Browne
Imagine, by Avril Lavigne
Nobody Told Me, by Big & Rich
Beautiful Boy, by Ben Harper
Isolation, by Snow Patrol
Grow Old With Me, by Postal
Service
Real Love, by Regina Spektor
And it is very interesting to see
how these musicians-all
accomplished in their own
right-(re)interpret John's songs,
and fill in gaps that perhaps we
maybe did not even know were
there to be filled.
But I guess that is what made
Lennon's tunes so enjoyable.
Not only did they always have
something to say, but the music
was just so remarkable, with
amazing harmonies and hooks.
And if you want more, there are
further covers available for
download.
