The Life And Work Of
Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
HD Net

Hunter Thompson shot himself in
the head at his home nearly 4 years
ago but in a great olde macabre
American tradition, it would appear
that dead iconic cult figures are
even more popular that live, aging
ones that had seen better days.

So in the period following the good
Doctor's suicide, we have been
plied with many new Thompson
items and this latest retrospective
DVD may be among the best of the
so far collected lot.

This theatrically released film
features two hours of an all-out
Gonzo assault, topped off with an
hour of bonus DVD only materials.

And while much of the footage here
has been seen before-especially
extracts from Breakfast With
Hunter, a late 1970s UK doc-there is
also much heretofore unseen,
unheard, or rarely so.

Indeed, for HST freaks, some of the
audio featured in this film culled
from some of his more infamous
assignments-including Hells
Angels and Fear and Loathing in
Las Vegas-are telling entry into
Thompson's heart of darkness
world(s) and modus operandi.

But perhaps the greatest strength
of this film are the varied oral
history participators-from Rolling
Stone founder Jann Wenner to
former Richard Nixon speech writer
and still high profile Neo-Con, Pat
Buchanan-that help bring
Thompson and his work back to life

Finally, Gonzo does not fall into the
trap of worshiping the (obviously)
deeply flawed HST, but rather
presents a fair warts (and bats) and
all of a very significant writer who
just happened to do his best work
fried to a crisp on drugs and booze.
