GRATEFUL DEAD
Three From The Vault

Rhino

According to the Three From The
Vault liner notes by Gary Lambert,
the Dead have released  53(!) live
albums over the span of their 40
year recording career.

Question: do we really need
another?

Answer: In the case of Three From
The Vault, yes.

No matter that this 2 disc set that
captured the second night of 6
shows in 1971 at the Capitol
Theater,  about 20 miles northeast of
New York City, is about 15 years
overdue.

And no matter that what was to be a
continuing concept will end with
volume three. (The say.)

Because for Deadheads-and many
other-this is one of their finest
performed and sounding concerts
ever captured for posterity.

Great takes of Truckin', Casey
Jones, and Pig Pen workouts on a
near 20 minute Good Lovin', attest.

And, only the second performance
of Bertha, which of course became a
concert staple.

The accompanying digipak booklet
gives a (somewhat) logical
explanation as to why this release
took 15 years to see the light of day,
but, what it does not explicitly do, is
explain the ins and outs of the
remaster of the CDs.

Although mastered recently by Joe
Gastwirt at Joe's Mastering Joint,
these multitracks tapes were
actually mixed by Dan Healy in the
early 90s, and apart from Gastwirt
restoring the original running order
of the gig, it appears the mix is as
was prepared over a decade ago.

But, here's where it gets
interesting-at least for audio freaks
the new masters
were run through a
High Definition  Compact Disc
processor which claims to lower
distoration and create an over-all
better sound experience-even if,
your playback device does not
contain the HDCD decoder chip.

Got that?

Oh, and according to the back of the
digi, Microsoft now owns the HDCD
technology, and should be coming
soon to a PC in your home.

In any event, this set captures Jerry
Garcia and the boys in perhaps the
first of one of their several "golden
ages," and as Dead fans sadly
know, Pig Pen went downhill health
wise shortly after the time period of
the Capitol shows.

A long, strange trip for this release,
but definitely worth it.
