The Last Days
Epic/Legacy
Recently, the download house,
Wolfgang's Vault, has brought the
promoter of the first rock
impresario back to the future.
Bay Area promoter Bill Graham
brought rock to the masses with
two venues on opposite coasts,
and now Wolfgang brings that
accumulated magic back via the
Internet.
But first, there was this box set of
the end of the Fillmore's run,
originally presented in 1971.
Still available as a 2 disc set,
anyone interested in what the
Fillmore/Graham scene was all
about, would be well advised to
check this set out.
The line up includes,
Santana-which was almost a house
band at the Fillmore West-Grateful
Dead, New Riders of the Purple
Sage, It's A beautiful Day, Taj Mahal,
Boz Scaggs, Elvin Bishop, Tower
of Power,Hot Tuna, Malo,
Quicksilver Messenger Service,
Cold Blood, and others.
Sure, Graham could be a
despot-and an interview included
here bares it out-but he sure knew
his (rock) show biz, and how to get
the most out of his performers.
Highlights of this set are the
Grateful Dead and Casey Jones,
Hot Tuna, an absolutely incredible
Santana take of Incident at
Neshabur and In A Silent Way, and
Boz Scaggs with a wild Baby's
Callin' Me Home.
And a real attraction here is a well
pictured 32 page booklet, which
actually lists every single San
Frisco Fillmore West gig from Nov.
6, 1965, to July 4, 1971.
A nice collection of famous Fillmore
concert posters are reproduced as
well.
And perhaps, this set may be on the
radar for a remaster, and the
expanded treatment some time in
the future.
Till then, we bid you goodnight...
