BRYAN FERRY
Dylanesque
Virgin/EMI
Never mind that former Roxy
Music front man Ferry is
reportedly a Bobby Dylan freak,
because this new covers CD
stands on its own merit and is
hardly a "tribute" recording, like
Ferry's previous As Time Goes
By, and These Foolish Things
collections.
To the contrary, Ferry seems to
channel Dylan across these
11tracks, and at least with
one-To Make You Feel My
Love-dare we say equal the Bob
master? It's that good.
And here's another example:
Dylan just about spat out
Positively 4th Street; the man
was pissed,and probably
righteously.
Ferry, however, turns 4th Street
into a much more ironic vessel,
with a haunting, lilting
arrangement that still gets the
point across as a croon.
Gates of Eden follows a similar
tact-and arrangement-to state
the message.
A Simple Twist of Fate follows
the original fairly closely, yet
Ferry adds even more whimsy.
Brian Eno is here to lend a hand
on this comp, and Robin Trower
plucks a mean acoustic guitar
on the disc closer, All Along The
Watchtower, which if anything is
too short for that good.
Master mixer Bob
Clearmountain pushed the
buttons, and it shows.
It's difficult sometimes to breath
new life into 45 year old songs.
Ferry does with Dylanesque.
