BOB DYLAN
The Other Side Of The
Mirror
Live At The Newport Folk
Festival
1963-1965
CBS/Sony
5.1 DVD
When Murray Lerner released
his film, FESTIVAL! 40 years
ago, he left a lot of film and
audio on the cutting room floor.
To try to rectify that loss, Lerner
has come up with a second look
at Newport, clocking in at nearly
90 minutes and featuring the
better part of 17 Bob Dylan
tunes.
Joan Baez also figures
prominently, and is a treat to see
and hear.
Some of what was only hinted at
previously in FESTIVAL!, now
comes to life here in glorious
black and white, but updated to
5.1 surround sound.
Perhaps of most note is Dylan's
two electric songs at the 1965
Newport show, Maggie's Farm,
and a bold Like A Rolling Stone.
Although not hammered out as
loud and raucously as was the
case a year later during a tour in
of the UK, the version presented
is nonetheless a rock artifact.
A bonus interview with director
Lerner is a fascinating inside
look at how the Newport festival
and Dylan coverage was
originally conceptualized by
Lerner, as well as his reflections
on the significance of the
festivals, and Dylan's
contributions to folk/rock music.
Also included is an 18 page
booklet.
