DONALD FAGEN
NIGHTFLY TRILOGY
MVi
Reprise

So, it took Steely Dan man
Donald Fagen 25 years to
accumulate 3 albums to make a
box set.

But since within reason, quality
is better than quantity, I guess
his fans can excuse his meagre
solo output, and applaud this
new set, which has a few bells
and (audio/visual) whistles.

I guess the sexiest-if not the
most useful as is-would be the
addition of the user activated
MusicVideoInteractive format.

Designed to  link-up with
Fagen's Website, when the
DVD is slipped into your
computer, you can access all
the content on the DVD, and
upon registration, download
some MP3s plus customized
ring-tones, and on Morph the
Cat, a lengthy 2006 World Café
interview with Fagen.

Each DVD also supplies lyrics,
liner notes and credits.

But, the real bonus here is the
Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Sound mixes as well as DTS
versions of all three Fagen solo
albums. Both 5.1 formats
provide excellent soundtage.

The Nightfly and Kamakiriad
appear to be straight transfers
from the previously available
DVD-Audio, to the AC-3  5.1
format used on standard DVDs,
while Morph the Cat is the same
as was released on the combo
CD/DVD package last year.

To my ears, all three records
sound great in this form of 5.1,
although for some reason
Kamakiriad does not make
constant use of the left and
right rear channels, but rather
using them occasionally just to
accent, rather than compliment.

Each DVD comes with several
music videos, although not all
are in 5.1.

Perhaps of equal import to the
5.1 mixes are the newly
remastered 24 bit stereo
versions of the three albums,
especially the improvements to
The Nightfly, the oldest of the
lot, and thus most improved.

Also included is a 10 track
bonus CD, which contains 3
live tracks, with two of them
previously unreleased, but
unfortunately, no 5.1 here.

Surprisingly not included is any
kind of printed liner notes or
booklet, but perhaps Fagen
figures that anyone buying
such a package would already
ready be well versed in
Fagenism, and their PC or MAC.

Yet some photos and what-not
would have put the icing on
this tasty boxed treat.
