THE BEATLES
PRESS REPORTS

Serious Beatlemaniacs take
note:this new compilation of UK
press on the Fabs originally
written from 1957 to 1971 and
compiled and brought up to
speed for 2007, is a long and
winding road, indeed.

Author Sandercombe has taken
realms of material, and broken it
down into 15 Fab years in a
cohesive package that gives the
reader a "you are there" feel.

As history teaches, many of the
reports done at the time of the
event can be rightly or wrongly
given a dose of revisionism, and
Sandercombe lends his own
excellent and current insights to
the raw reports, making (more)
sense of it's all too much for
even hard-core completists.

Of course, a 317 page book can
hardly cover anywhere near
"all" the words written in the
English press about the Beatles,
Sandercombe has managed to
present some of the more
interesting and tasty bits here
from publications such as Disc,
Music Echo and Record Mirror.

Of some note is a transcript of
the Beatles first radio interview,
well before they had their
patented cheek down pat,
although John Lennon does
show a head start on the others.

Also included are two 1971
Melody Maker interviews with
Paul McCartney and George
Martin, which reveal much.

There are also some
seldom-seen photos, although
on the down side, they are
reproduced in black and white,
when colour would certainly do.

Yet that's  small quibble as it is
likely not the pix that would draw
anyone to this
volume.

Perhaps the
author can
next tackle a
book on the
North American
writings on the
Fabs, including
some of those
wacky fanzine
mags that got
most things so
terribly wrong.
